Diet and Hearing Health

When looking after your hearing long term, it’s essential to adopt a range of preventative measures including wearing hearing protection when subjected to loud environments. Did you know that your diet can also come into play when considering good hearing health? Like most aspects of our health, what we choose to put into our bodies can affect our hearing.

To help you make better choices when it comes to your hearing health and diet, the team here at Hearsafe Australia has put together a helpful guide below outlining a few key foods to consider.

• Foods high in folate such as leafy greens

Consuming leafy greens comes with an array of benefits for our health and our hearing is included in this. Leafy greens such as kale and spinach are high in folate which can come in very handy when decreasing the risk of age-related hearing loss. Folate can be found in a range of other foods including lentils, chickpeas and kidney beans.

• Foods rich in zinc such as seeds & nuts

When it comes to hearing health, foods high in zinc are another item to include within your diet. Zinc is rich in immune-boosting properties which can be linked to preventing hearing issues such as ear infections. Foods that are high in magnesium include a range of nuts and seeds such as almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds.

• Foods with high levels of magnesium such as avocado

Because of its association with neuroprotection, magnesium also has the potential to help with preventing hearing loss. You might be happy to know that there are many popular foods out there high in magnesium including avocado, whole grains and even dark chocolate!

• Foods high in potassium such as bananas

Potassium has been found to assist with regulating fluid throughout the body, this can therefore be very helpful when promoting good hearing health. There are many delicious and nutritious foods to choose from which can give you a handy boost of potassium, a few key diet items you should try incorporating include bananas, oranges and potatoes.

Diet can be a very useful element when promoting positive hearing health and preventing hearing loss. But before making any drastic changes to your diet, always be sure to consult your GP first. Hearing protection is still crucial for hearing health—if you would like to learn more about the hearing protection solutions available here at Hearsafe Australia, browse our range or get in touch with our team of experts for advice.
