Don’t let headphones damage your hearing

  • 1 min read

Headphones, earphones and Airpods are all the rage these days and are sure to be in many stockings this Christmas, but it’s important to be aware of the impact headphones can have on your hearing.

Whether you’re listening to music, a podcast, watching a movie or talking on the phone with headphones in, you need to be mindful of the volume level whilst listening. With the devices being so close to your ears, damage to your hearing can come on very quickly depending on the volume is too loud. Even if you’re listening at a moderate level, you still need to be careful as using earphones over a long period of time can also cause damage.

While you can usually regulate the volume level yourself when listening to music or podcasts, you can’t always control what comes out of someone’s mouth on the other end of the phone. We’ve all been there when someone starts yelling at the kids whilst on the phone to you and nearly blows out an eardrum. Or underestimating just how loud the gunfire scenes in that action movie would be. That sudden noise exposure can still be causing you damage.

So, always monitor the volume level on your headphones or earphones, try to avoid using them for long periods of time, and remember to protect your hearing with custom earplugs when you know you’re going to be in a noisy environment.
